We recently joined Mike James on the BeastNet Podcast to talk about Side Quest Adventures, where it came from, what we’re building now, and some of the strange ideas we want to bring to life next.
Episode 439 covers a pretty wide range of ground. We talk about SISU 24 PNW, Lord of the Hill, Echo Trace, the different types of adventures we want to create, and why we think adults could use more opportunities to get outside, play, try something new, and occasionally make questionable decisions in the woods.
We also get into what makes SISU 24 different from a traditional endurance race, including the fact that you don’t have to spend 24 hours running. Everyone gets to choose what they want their adventure to look like, whether that means chasing mileage, trying a trail after dark, competing for the top spot, or just seeing what kind of story they end up with by morning.
Lord of the Hill gets some airtime too, including the decreasing-lap-time format, the wonderfully awful climb up Oh, Lord Hill, and our plans to turn the whole thing into a medieval tournament complete with racer banners, costumes, spectators, and hopefully a proper herald.
We also talk about Echo Trace, our upcoming outdoor puzzle adventure, and some of the bigger ideas behind Side Quest Adventures. At one point Erinn probably explains the long-term vision best:
“Basically we want to be able to play Zelda in real life.”
That about sums it up.
More than anything, the episode ended up being a good snapshot of Side Quest Adventures in its early days. We’re still building, experimenting, and figuring out where all of this can go, but the idea at the center of it is pretty simple:
Life needs more side quests.
We all have our main quests. Work, family, responsibilities, all the serious stuff. The side quests are the things that add some flavor to life, give us a story to tell, get us outside, and remind us to actually have some fun along the way.
